Orbital Fracture Repair

Orbital fractures typically result from severe trauma to the eye socket (the orbit). Orbital fractures if large may entrap the muscles used to control eyelid position causing double vision. Large fractures of the orbit may result in sunken eye appearance after swelling resolves. The eye socket is typically repaired by reinforcing the fractured area with a synthetic implant. Orbital fracture repair surgery is usually performed within a few weeks of the injury. The procedure is designed and tailored to the specific patient’s injury. The surgery involves advanced plastic surgical techniques.

Before surgery

The doctors at Advanced Eye Care Center will perform a comprehensive evaluation of your eyes. Antibiotic and anti-inflammatory medications are typically prescribed immediately following the injury to reduce swelling and inflammation. A plan will be discussed regarding surgical technique, timing, risks and benefits, and type of anesthesia.

What to expect on procedure day

You will arrive 30-60 minutes prior to the procedure. Once you have been checked in and settled comfortably, you will be prepared for surgery. Orbital fracture surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia. You may be given medication to control anxiety. You should be quite comfortable during the procedure.

After the procedure you will need someone to drive you home. You may experience some bruising and swelling for several weeks after surgery. Cold compresses and head elevation may be helpful for the first few days after surgery. The doctor may prescribe oral antibiotics and antinfammatory medications as well as eye ointment or eye drops to use for a few days after surgery.

Postoperative discomfort can be significant. Pain medication will be prescribed. You will need to take special care in cleaning around the eye for the first week or two.

Stitches are usually removed within 5 to ten days after surgery. Self absorbing stitches will dissolve on their own. The doctor will instruct you when it is safe to be resuming make-up and cosmetics.

Expectations

Your eye may subtly change and improve over several months after surgery as the healing process continues.

Serious complications from orbital surgery can occur. You will be given all the information you need to make an informed decision about surgery. Be sure to have all your questions answered to your satisfaction.
